This plate is from a series of 100 prints published by Joannes Meyssens titled: "Image de divers hommes desprit sublime qui par leur art et science devront vivre eternellement et des quels la lovange et renommée faict estonner le monde, A Anvers mis en lumiere par Iean Meyssens peinctre et vendeur de l'art au Cammestraet l'an M.DC.XLIX", first published in Antwerp in 1649 (Hollstein 5-104, under Joannes Meyssens). The prints were known to be published in six different editions. - First as published print series by Joannes Meyssens. - Second in Cornelis de Bie's "Het Gulden Kabinet" (Joannes Meyssens: Antwerp, 1661). The portraits are now printed with letterpress on the verso. - Third in "The True Effigies of the Most Eminent Painters and other Famous Artists that have flourished in Europe curiously engraven on 125 copper plates" (Black Swan & T. Browne at ye Prestle and Mortar without Temple Barr: and are to be sold by them, and I. Smith at the West end of Exeter Exchange, 1694; re-published in 1705). The prints are often found with manuscript pen and ink numbering, these impressions are here catalogued as beloning to the third edition. - Fourth in Padre Sebastiano Resta's "The Portraits of the most eminent painters and other famous artists, that have flourished in Europe" (Joseph Duke: London, 1739). - Fifth as "An historical and chronological series of the most eminent painters. Containing, in a concise manner, the time of their birth, death, and When they Flourished. Together with their age, country, Places of Residence, Masters, Excellencies and Principal Works. Chiefly collected from a manuscript of the late famous Father Resta" (Joseph Duke: London, 1739). - Sixth in "The Portraits of the most eminent painters and other famous artists, that have flourished in Europe," (Oliver Payne & W.H. Toms: London, year unknown?). The series has been engraved by various engravers such as Paulus Pontius, Peter Danckerts de Rij, Jacques Neeffs, Conraad Waumans, Lucas Vorsterman II, Frederik Bouttats the Elder, Frans van der Steen, Antoine Couchet, Pieter de Bailliu, Antonie van der Does, Carel van Savoyen, Wenceslaus Hollar (New Hollstein 1052-1060) and Pieter de Jode II, and contains five portraits after Anthony van Dyck (New Hollstein, Van Dyck, 319-323). |

This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
