Description

Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal, President of Carers Trust, recognised the work of The Co-operative’s charity champions at a “Dinner of Dreams” event.

It was revealed that The Co-operative’s staff, members and customers have now raised over £5 million for its Charity of the Year, Carers Trust, and, five employees – nominated by colleagues – were given a chance to meet Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal in recognition of their fundraising feats.

The special evening, held at Event City, Manchester, and hosted by actor, comedian and presenter Rob Brydon, highlighted how the money raised by The Co-operative will provide desperately needed breaks, information, advice, support and services for unpaid young adult carers – 14 to 25 year-olds facing the challenges of caring for a family member or friend unable to cope without their support.

The event was also attended by young adult carers from the region and the charity’s community ambassador of the year.

Thea Stein, Chief Executive of Carers Trust, said: “I continue to be overwhelmed by our partnership with The Co-operative. At the start of the year we dared to dream of a transformative year for Carers Trust and for the young people in our communities who desperately need our support and services.

“Staff at The Co-operative have carried out all kinds of amazing activities including mountain climbing, abseiling, running marathons, sky-diving and a host of local branch and store events. They have involved their local communities and really highlighted the issue of young adult carers – a group that has until recently fallen between two services, being: adult carers and young carers.

“I am delighted to say that the money raised is already making a difference with young people across the country telling us how thrilled they are that this hidden issue is now being recognised.”

Michael Fairclough The Co-operative Group’s Head of Community and Co-operative Investment, said: “There are young people in our communities taking on incredible levels of practical and emotional caring responsibilities, often at the expense of their own schooling, further education and aspirations, who desperately need our support. I am extremely proud of the fantastic commitment and support shown by The Co-operative’s staff, members and customers as they work together to make a difference to the lives of thousands of young adult carers who care, unpaid, for a family member or loved one.”

There are an estimated 500,000 unpaid young adult carers (14-25 year-olds) in the UK who take on practical and emotional caring responsibilities for a family member or friend who are ill, frail, disabled or have mental health or addiction problems and cannot cope without their support.
