Description
English: The Herbert P. Bissell House, 549 Linwood Avenue at West Balcom Street, Buffalo, New York, December 2021. Like the Thomas McFarland House just a couple blocks to its south, this is an example of the hybridization of the Queen Anne and Shingle schools of architecture that was very common around the turn of the century, and as such is very typical of the work of local architect Charles Day Swan. However, by comparison with its aforementioned counterpart, the scale is tilted a bit more toward the Queen Anne: while you do indeed see features such as sawtooth shingles on the façade and a rugged Potsdam sandstone foundation on the front porch, here the massing is less bottom-heavy, there's more of an emphasis on verticality, and the Classical detailing on the front porch is more exquisite: the unusual paired columns feature stylized acanthus leaves and beading at their capitals, and a dentil row tops off the ornately carved entablature. Attorney Herbert Porter Bissell (1856-1919) was, at the time of the house's construction in 1891, the junior partner in the law firm of Bissell, Sicard, Brundage & Bissell. He lived here until 1903 and much later became involved in Democratic politics, which culminated in his nomination to the State Supreme Court in 1912. He served in the role until his death of a heart attack, which occurred while on the bench hearing a case.
