The crews on the two ships stood at their guns for hours, but theGerman captain made no attempt to fife upon the fort. Finally he startedon a cruise down the coast, but Captain L,eary followed him and would notbe shaken off. The two ships came at length into harbor again, and theAmerican had gained his point of preventing the German from firing uponthe fort. Captain L,eary upheld the honor of his countrys flag at a timewhen our government seemed to take but a half-hearted interest in Samoanaffairs. He was far from cable communications, and on his own responsi-bility thus bravely defied and held in check a warship far superior to hisown. For his brave and determined stand Captain I^eary received thethanks of the Legislature of Maryland, his native State, but the governmenttook no action in the matter.
