English: Herringbone wall By the Great Keep of Usk Castle(Wales), but from what period I don't know - it looks fairly modern relative to the castle.
This herringbone stonework is typical of the fireback in a fireplace hearth, of which Usk castle has several examples. Flat stone slabs would be damaged by surface spalling from the heat. Mortared stonework would be corroded by soot & flue tar. A common solution was densely-worked herringbone stonework, with minimal mortar. |
