English: Portrait of Karl August, Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (1757-1828)
Deutsch: Herzog Carl August als Ascherslebener Kürassier. Herzog Carl August von Sachsen-Weimar als Chef des Kürassieregiments von Rohr in Aschersleben. Carl August, seit 1787 in preußischem Militärdienst, nahm am Feldzug gegen das revolutionäre Frankreich teil. Auf seine Einladung reiste Goethe im August 1792 ins Feldlager bei Longwy, wo er nach Besuch der Mutter in Frankfurt am 27. August eintraf. Am 20. September ereignete sich die berühmte erfolglosde Kanonade von Valmy.
