English: Hethpool Stone Circle, southern ring. See 1740347 for description.
The southern ring is thought to be some 50 to 66m in diameter. 6 large stones are clearly visible with others probably buried and often showing as parch marks in the grass. The rough patches visible in the foreground of this panorama may indicate such buried stones. Starting with the large stone on the left, there is another in the distance (aligned with a feed bin), a larger one to its right below the wooded hill, another directly below snow-capped, Great Hetha, and two to the right, one partly hidden by sheep. If there really was two huge stone circles here (and not everyone is in agreement), it would have been a considerable monument, unique in Northumberland, dominating the entrance to the already impressive College valley. The array of hill forts on many hills of this part of the Cheviots are an indication that it was an attractive area for ancient settlement for several thousand years. |
