Notes

This tile is one of 39 tiles or tile fragments in the V&A Museum that the museum believes come from the Hayreddin bathhouse (Cinili Hamam or Tiled bathhouse) located on Itfaiye Street in Istanbul. This is explained in the entry for another tile with Inv. no. 961-1892. The bathhouse was built by Barbaros Hayreddin Paşa in 1540-1546 (Barbarossa died in 1546). The building was sold off in the 19th century and the remaining tiles removed and sold.

There are tiles with the same design in other museums. Two are in the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg, Inv. nos. 1877, 131-32 and others are in the Leighton House Museum in London.(Atasoy & Raby 1989, p. 375 fn. 14) There is also an example in the Louvre (Inv. no. MAO 936/591)

Atasoy and Raby illustrate a rimless shallow dish (fig. 221) that has an identical design only flipped left to right. (The use of stencils is discussed on p.59).
