Notes |
This tile is one of 39 tiles or tile fragments in the V&A Museum that the museum believes come from the Hayreddin bathhouse (Cinili Hamam or Tiled bathhouse) located on Itfaiye Street in Istanbul. This is explained in the entry for another tile with Inv. no. 961-1892. The bathhouse was built by Barbaros Hayreddin Paşa in 1540-1546 (Barbarossa died in 1546). The building was sold off in the 19th century and the remaining tiles removed and sold. |

Atasoy and Raby illustrate a rimless shallow dish (fig. 221) that has an identical design only flipped left to right. (The use of stencils is discussed on p.59). | |||||||||||||||||||||||
