Summary edit

Description
English: John on Patmos / the Passion of Christ. around 1500. Oak wood. In the middle of a wide landscape reminiscent of the Lower Rhine, John the Evangelist sits on a hill that represents the island of Patmos, where the apocalypse is shared in the vision. In heaven Mary appears as the Apocalyptic Woman, clothed in the sun and at the feet of the moon. On the back of the panel, in a circular shape, you can see the gray, desolate world in which the Passion of Christ takes place. Jesus is the only redemption for the earthly valley of tears, and accordingly his symbol, the pelican, occupies the center of the picture. The panel could originally have been the wing of a diptych or triptych. With its wonderful depictions of landscapes, it is one of Hieronymus Bosch's main works.
Deutsch: Johannes auf Patmos / die Passion Christi. um 1500. Eichenholz.
