The trunk of a mature apple tree divides into several smaller branches, curving upwards in an open bowl shape and then dividing into smaller branches at the top. An area around the base of the tree is cleared of woody vegetation.

One of the apple trees growing at Purchase Knob. Note how the area immediately surrounding the historic tree has been cleared of woody vegetation, improving access to water, nutrients, light, and space.
