Description
English: Historic Branchville station is the World's Oldest Railroad Junction, where South Carolina Canal & Rail Road Company began the first successful scheduled steam railroad service in America on December 25, 1830. By 1833 its 136 miles from Charleston to Hamburg made it the world's longest railroad. (All information derived from historic SC signage on site.)
Original track location is visible in the sandy foreground of photo, highlighted by the rail car seen at the right. Modern tracks on the left of the building support freight trains which now pass through the station.
Railroad buffs can freely walk the property and also enjoy light fare served in a cafe inside the historic building. The town of Branchville celebrates its history with an annual Raylrode Daze Festivul each September; 2018 marks the Festivul's 50th year.
