Description |
English: Caption: Preservation is never a fully “completed” work though; it is an ongoing practice. The preservation work of the past becomes part of the structure’s ongoing history, to be revisited in future historic structure reports. Image: Paragraph from the 2009 report reads “Never satisfied with the U.S. Army’s restoration, especially of the North Dependency, the NPS undertook its own restoration process beginning in 1958. The scope of work for the North Dependency included major restoration and reinterpretation. Before proceeding however, they documented what the Army had done with photographs and drawings. Four years later, new drawings were completed reflecting a change in programs resulting from evidence found during the NPS investigation. In 1964, the interior restoration of the North Dependency was effectively cancelled. Interpretation of these spaces was discontinued, and the rooms reverted to single levels and utilitarian functions, serving as spaces for the bookstore, storage, and a dressing room." "Preservation is never a fully “completed” work though; it is an ongoing practice. The preservation work of the past becomes part of the structure’s ongoing history, to be revisited in future historic structure reports. Image shows an excerpt from the 2009 Historic Structure Report for the North Dependency, Arlington House (page 19). These images were prepared as part of a series focusing on cultural landscape reports and historic structure reports, highlighting examples and illustrating how the reports relate to preservation history in the National Park System.
