Hestarted life in Worcester literally without a dollar,having but seventy-five cents when he came. He gotahead rapidly. In 1870 he became foreman for H.W. Eddy, the contractor, and for eighteen years hewas in full charge of many of Mr. Eddys largestcontracts. This experience fitted him thoroughly forhis business when he started for himself in thebuilding and contracting business. The backing ofthe late Charles F. Washburn helped him to makea good beginning. He had a shop and planingmill at 90 Foster street. Some of the contracts he hadwere for the residences of Charles F. Washburnand Charles G. Washburn, the Washburn block, res-idences of Frank B. Smith, P. W. Moen, and JesseMoore. He built all but one of the WorcesterAcademy buildings. He had the contract for theCro
