Description

NPS/Patrick Myers

The area around Great Sand Dunes is a land of tough extremes: burning sand, drought, arctic winters, an intense mosquito season, and isolation. For three generations, the Linger family owned the historic Medano Ranch, now within the boundaries of Great Sand Dunes National Park. A century ago, Margaret Linger was photographed in her formal white school dress, drinking fresh, cool artesian water - almost in defiance of the harsh environment. This painting, based on the historic photo, illustrates the quiet perseverance and resilience of the settlers who called Great Sand Dunes "home".
