Description
English: Built in 1748 by Moravian Settlers, this building was home to young single men in the community, though it has since become part of Moravian University. The building was utilized as a hospital for the Continental Army during the United States Revolutionary War during the winter in 1776-1778. The building became the home of the Moravian Seminary for Young Ladies in 1815, serving various roles for the school before its 1954 merger with Moravian College and Theological Seminary. The building features a rustic stone exterior, a mansard and hipped wood shingle roof, six-over-six double-hung windows, brick arches over most window and door openings, two double entry doors in the central bays of the first floor, a “widows walk” deck and balustrade atop the roof, hipped and shed roof dormers, and two 19th Century red brick additions to the side and rear, built for the Moravian Seminary. The building is a contributing structure in the Central Bethlehem Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, and expanded to include additional buildings in 1988, and is a contributing structure in the Historic Moravian Bethlehem District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and as a National Historic Landmark in 2012.
