This building was opened as a hospital for the inspectionof the public on October 3, 1887. It contained five wardsand twentj^-five beds, it being soon necessary to increase thenumber of beds to thirty. In the third report of the HospitalAssociation, 1888-89, Dr. Oatley, resident physician, thusmentions this opening:

HOSPITAL. 489 On October, 1887, there was thrown open for the inspection of thepublic a building designed for a Dispensarj^, but used temporarily for aHospital. On the following day the first patient, a woman, was admitted fortreatment. For the first week or two only one or two of the wardswere opened, but by degrees the others began to fill, until during thepast winter the capacity has been severely tested, and, in fact, admis-sion has been refused on account of lack of room. Six months haveelapsed since October last, and during that time over 200 patientshave been treated, with but one death, and that due to the culmina-tion of a rapid and incurable disease. Of the number treated, Phila-delphia has naturally furnished the greater share; Pennsylvania atlarge has credit for 15, Delaware 7, Maryland 2, Connecticut i and Ohio i.Native-born Americans were in a large majority, with those fromIreland next and Germany a good third, while England, Italy, Poland,France, Scotland, Wales and Ru
