| Description |
English: Holborn: Former Kingsway tram subway The former London County Council was responsible for building the tramway which initially ran from the Angel to Aldwych, but was later extended to Victoria Embankment. The first section was opened by King Edward VII on 24 February 1906. This is the ramp in Southampton Row leading down to the northern portal of the tram subway that ran the full length of Kingsway and Aldwych to the southern portal in Lancaster Place. The tram system was closed in 1952 and the subway was abandoned. The current works in the subway are involved in waterproofing the tunnel while the road surface in Kingsway is renewed.
There is a photo taken from more or less the same location as this one, late in the life of the tramway, here http://www.yellins.com/transporthistory/bus4/subway.html The proposed new Cross River Transit tramway scheme, scheduled for completion in 2016, will run in Southampton Row and Kingsway, but it is not intended to re-use the old subway. |
