Description

I can say more about the object this figure is holding high over his head than I can about the figure itself.

He is holding a "copper," which was one of several objects that symbolized wealth and was highly prized in the traditional First Nations of the Canadian Pacific Northwest.

Coppers increased in value every time they changed hands. It is not uncommon to find antique coppers today with missing pieces. The owners cut the coppers and either destroyed or gave away the pieces as a show of the owners' great wealth.

Interestingly enough, as I learned from the display of antique coppers in the U'mista Cultural Centre's collection, individual coppers were so treasured they were given names.

It's possible the figure holding the copper is a chief.
