Built between1801-1803 the property was a wedding gift from Charles Carroll of Carrollton, a Maryland signer of the Declaration of Independence, to his son Charles Carroll Jr. upon his marriage to Harriett Chew of Philadelphia. It appears Charles Jr. acted as a "gentleman architect" in the design of the house, which was heavily influenced by the work of Andrea Palladio.
