English: Hope Cement Works. A close-up of the main chimney and adjacent building from just off the bridleway to the south; the round horizontal pipe to the bottom right (whose size can be deduced by the stairways running up the side of the adjacent building) was rotating slowly - impressive. The cement works was commissioned in 1929, has its own rail link, and produces 1.3 million tonnes of cement per year, or about 10% of the UK supply, from around 2 million tonnes of limestone extracted. |
