Description Houelt's Cross, a wheel-head cross at St Illtyd's Church, Llantwit Major, South Glamorgan, Wales. 9th century. Latin inscription reading "IN NOMINE DI PATRIS ET SPERETUS SANCDI SANC CRUCEM HOUELT PROPERABIT PRO ANIMA RES PATRES EJUS" ("In the name of God the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost, this cross Houelt prepared for the soul of Res his father"). Houelt is Hywel ap Rhys (822–886), and Res is Rhys ap Arthfael (b. 792), both kings of Glamorgan.
