Description
English: Set incongruously amongst the old warehouses, machine shops and industrial buildings of Buffalo's Upper Black Rock Historic District is the diminutive wood-framed side-gabled house at 19 Mason Street, as seen here in July 2020. The house has no especial architectural notability (though the window heads on the ground floor hint at an Italianate influence) and the vinyl siding is of recent vintage, but it's indeed notable as the only extant of what were once several similar examples of vernacular residential architecture on this narrow alleyway behind Niagara Street. The first recorded resident was maltster Fred Ledor, who lived there as of 1889, though he's almost certainly not the original one, as the house was already extant at the time of the publication of the Hopkins Atlas of Buffalo in 1872. Like most of its subsequent residents, Ledor was a working-class industrial laborer and he didn't live there for long. Remarkably, the house remains a private residence to this day.
