Summary edit

Description
English: As seen in July 2021: the house at 323 River Street is a typical example of the building stock of the Cayugatown section of Depew, New York, comprising the residential side streets northwest of the village's main intersection of Transit Road and Broadway. Beginning in the 1910s, the area begame an enclave of Polish, Hungarian, and Ukrainian immigrants who came to work on the New York Central Railroad and in ancillary concerns such as the National Car Wheel Works, the Gould Coupler Works, and the Union Car Company. Essentially 20th-century analogues to the "workers' cottages" that sprung up in the industrial precincts of neighboring Buffalo in the 19th century, these are modestly-scaled, utilitarian-styled residences that housed multiple families at the apex of Depew's industrial history in the early 20th century, but mostly serve as single-family homes in the present day. The history of this particular house is fairly murky: it was built sometime between 1927 and '35, and an early resident was Stanley Onisk (1905-1972), a meter reader for the Western New York Water Company who lived there with his wife Constance (1907-1970; she was the photographer's great-great-aunt) and their three children. The Onisk family moved in no later than 1935 and continued residing there until at least 1956.
