Description
English: Houses in Gordon Square: end elevation. End elevation of the houses at the north-east corner of the square, seen across Endsleigh Place. The houses at the NE corner of the square are - I believe - the earliest, built by Thomas Cubitt, who also built the west side of Tavistock Square, just to the east. This end elevation goes in for plenty of Classical detailing, but skimps on glazing. The building dates from the 1820's, when the Window Tax was still in force. There are four glazed windows and three blank ones, and - a very odd feature - what appear to be two blank doorways at first-floor level. This elevation is illustrated in Sir John Summerson's book, 'Georgian London', p192 in the Penguin edition.
