English: Houses, Vogue Gyratory, Christmas Day 2008 The only surviving buildings from the time before this site was redeveloped in 1983-84. The road junction was constructed to ease the flow of traffic onto what was then the A27 from Upper Lewes Road out of shot to the left, Hollingdean Road and Bear Road both beyond the garage. What it did do was create a confusing and very unpopular one way system with not enough distance to change lanes for the unwary. The name itself comes from a former cinema that stood on the junction of Lewes Road and Hollingdean which opened as the Gaiety in 1937 before becoming the Ace in 1965, the Vogue in 1971 and the Classic in 1979 before closing its doors in 1980. During the period known as the Vogue it specialised in pornographic films and strip shows making this one of the few roads in Britain to remember the dirty mac brigade who frequented this establishment. The garage is built on the site of the former Lewes Road viaduct which carried the Kemp Town line over the road from 1869-1971, the eastern portion was demolished in 1975 and the western part next to the two houses came down in 1983. The house on the left was also once a pub. |
