| Description |
English: The Hudson-Athens Lighthouse, as seen in June 2022 from a NYC-bound Amtrak train that had just passed the Hudson city line in the town of Greenport, New York. Located on a sandy ridge in the middle of the Hudson River, the lighthouse dates to 1874, when a Congressional outlay of $35,000 enabled its construction. Though the mansard-roofed Second Empire-styled dwelling has been vacant since the facility's automation in 1949, its interior has been restored to its period appearance and is open for occasional guided tours. The beacon, meanwhile, remains in active service today, with a fifth-order Fresnel lens illuminating to a range of four nautical miles. |
