The soldier in the left is holding a Danuvia 43M submachine gun, a 1930s designed Hungarian gun. During World War II, Hungary was part of the Axis powers, as it shared lots of characteristics with Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany. In 1940, under pressure from Germany, Hungary joined the Axis. In 1941, Hungarian forces participated in the invasion of Yugoslavia and the invasion of the Soviet Union. However, due to the deception in the Soviet campaign, Hungary engaged in armistice negotiations with the United States and the United Kingdom. Hitler discovered this betrayal and, in March 1944, German forces occupied Hungary. Shortly after USSR’s expansion an armistice was signed with Hungary. Amazingly, because of that the son of Miklós Horthy, the signer to this armistice, was kidnapped by German commandos and Horthy was forced to revoke the armistice. The, Hungarian fascist leader Ferenc Szálasi established a new government. In 1945, Hungarian and German forces in Hungary were defeated by invading Soviet armies.
