English: Built for the British War Office in 1916 by the Hunslet Engine Company in Leeds, England, the locomotives was shipped off to France for use on light railways supporting logistics for fighting. It arrived during the summer of 1916 and worked on the light 60cm gauge railways supporting the British Front Line during WW1. Ultimately, 155 of this type were built, the last ones being finished in 1919. After the Armistice, HE1215 was sold to work on the Australian Sugar Can Railways on Queensland, and worked until 1962. In 1964, it was placed on display at Rowan Bay Bush Children's Home, where it remained until 1996. Sold to an enthusiast who started to restore it, he eventually decided to part with it in 2005, and it was repatriated to the UK in 2008. Since then, it has been restored to full working order by the War Office Locomotive Trust, and can be seen in steam at the Apedale Valley Light Railway in Staffordshire, England. A number of other examples survive in the Southern Hemisphere, but 1215 is the only one able to steam and is unique in the Northern Hemisphere. |
