Description
English: On July 3, 2018, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of Hurricane Fabio as it strengthened in the Pacific Ocean south of the Baja Peninsula. The large storm sported a tight apostrophe-shape with long bands of convection circulating around a cloud-filled eye.

Fabio formed as a depression on Saturday, June 30 around 5 p.m. EDT. It was the seventh tropical depression of the Eastern Pacific Ocean hurricane season. By 5 a.m. EDT on July 1, the depression strengthened into a tropical storm and was named Fabio. Tropical Storm Fabio travelled towards the north-northwest over open ocean where the environment was conducive to rapid strengthening.

The storm reached peak strength late on July 3 when maximum sustained winds reached about 110 mph (177 km/h). By July 4 Hurricane Fabio began to encounter reduced sea surface temperatures and weaken.

The National Hurricane Center issued its last advisory on Fabio late on July 6. The advisory stated that the convection associated with the system had vanished and the cyclone appears only as an elongated swirl of low clouds. The remnants were forecast to move west-northwestward and then turn westward to degenerate into a trough of low pressure within 24 – 48 hours. Swells previously generated by the cyclone may continue to affect the coasts of southern California and the Baja California Peninsula through July 8.
