Description
English: Hurricane Tammy was approaching landfall on the Caribbean Island of Barbuda on October 21, 2023, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer acquired this true-color image.

Tammy formed over the Atlantic Ocean on October 18 and began moving northwest towards the Leeward Islands (the northern islands of the Lesser Antilles). According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Hurricane Tammy made landfall in Barbuda at 9:15 p.m. EDT on October 21 as a Category 1 storm with estimated maximum sustained winds of 85 mph (140 km/h). They also reported that the Meteorological Service in Antigua reported maximum sustained winds as high as 90 mph (145 km/h) over Barbuda between October 21-22.

Heavy rains continued over parts of the Leeward Islands through the afternoon of October 23, as Tammy slowly moved away from the islands. There are reports of power outages, flooding, and wind damage to buildings, trees, and roads in some places on several islands, including Guadeloupe and Barbuda. According to its Facebook page, Barbuda Channel CTV6 remains unable to broadcast due to Hurricane Tammy.

At 0300 UTC on October 24 (11:00 p.m. EDT on October 23), the NHC advised that Tammy remained at Category 1 strength, with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 km/h). It was located about 665 mi (1060 km) south of Bermuda and was heading north-northeastward. The advisory also reads that “Tammy’s future path remains unusually unclear, especially at the 4-5 day range”, but it is expected to get steered northward in about 2 days and is most likely to turn eastward or northeastward and to become a post-tropical cyclone by October 26. Although swells generated by Tammy will continue to affect portions of the Leeward Islands, the British and U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico during the next few days, there are no coastal hurricane watches or warnings in effect. The swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
