Summary edit
DescriptionHydraulic engines Cross Keys Bridge - geograph.org.uk - 372285.jpg |
English: Hydraulic engines Cross Keys Bridge By Sir W G Armstrong, Whitworth & Co Ltd, Elswick works, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Three cylinder oscillating engines with reversing motion. Duplicated for redundancy. Uses high pressure water - the original "hydraulic" before this new-fangled oil hydraulic stuff. These are below the floor of the central control cabin and we saw them trundled round, disengaged from the drive.
They are still in situ but they are disengaged and the bridge is now turned by small oil hydraulic engines (both working together) under computer control. |
