Summary edit

Description
English: Beech Woodwart (Hypoxylon fragiforme) This is a common species that can be found on dead beech wood. It is pale pinkish in colour when young, but darkens with age, becoming brick-red, then brown (as shown here), and finally black.

The individual hemispheres are up to a centimetre across, and have a warty surface. Through the hand-lens, they appear to be covered with a regular pattern of tiny plates, each plate having a raised centre; these bumps are what give the fungus its warted appearance.

Some of the fruiting bodies in this image are missing parts of their surface, and appear to be honeycombed inside. However, they are not honeycombed all the way through: instead, these spore-producing chambers (which are called perithecia) form a single layer just below the surface, and the warts are the mouths of these chambers.

These fruiting bodies were found close to a footpath, on a piece of detached bark.
