Summary edit

Description
English: Interest plays a major role in insurance and finance. Mathematically, interest becomes particularly interesting when it is credited at ever smaller intervals and interest on interest is considered. At an interest rate of 100%, one euro is worth just e euros after one year if the 100% is credited at an infinite number of small intervals (see comic). e is Euler's number. This consideration goes back to the Swiss mathematician Jakob Bernoulli, who dealt with it as early as the 17th century. The insight is valid for everyone and thus affirms the universality of mathematics.
