A model of the Ikazuchi Class destroyer IJN Sazanami at the Glasgow Transport Museum, 2 March 2007. Six Akazuchi Class destroyers were completed in 1898-99, all designed and built by Yarrow, Poplar, then considered the world’s premier builders of destroyers. These turtle-back vessels were influenced by the Royal Navy’s ’30-knotters’. They had 4 funnels, had 6,000 ihp triple expansion reciprocating engines, 2 screws, a maximum speed of 30 kts, measured 224 ft x 20 ft x 5 ft and had a displacement of 305 tons. She was armed with 1x12 pdr, 5x 6 pdr guns and 2x18”TT (two singles set on a turntable). The Sazanami fought in the Battle of Tsushima during the Russo-Japanese War 1904-05 when she captured Admiral Radjesvenski who had been on injured on his battleship and been transferred to the destroyer Buinii which was then taken by the Sazanami. She was scrapped in 1914. |
