Nederlands: Op de terreinen aan de hoek van de Opgeëistenlaan met de Kolveniersgang in Gent waar vroeger textielfabriek UCO de Hemptinne was gevestigd, is er nu een woonwijk aangelegd. Jules de Hemptinne richt in 1853 een zogenaamde 'fire proof cotton mill' op, een spinnerij van het Manchestertype met aanvankelijk twee verdiepingen. Tussen 1870 en 1910 wordt de spinnerij verhoogd en aangevuld met verschillende lage bijgebouwen. Vanaf 1980 komt er ook een weverij bij. In 1983 sluit de fabriek. Het Manchestergebouw is beschermd en intussen in verschillende fases gerestaureerd, om er uiteindelijk het centrum voor basiseducatie Leerpunt Gent-Meetjesland-Leieland in te huisvesten. Van de omliggende lage fabrieksgebouwen blijft niks meer over, behalve een buitenmuur aan de Lieve. De schoorsteen is erkend als ZEN-erfgoed, wat staat voor erfgoed Zonder Economisch Nut, zodat de schouw met premies verder kan onderhouden worden. |
