Title
IOW-FE6C22 Early-Medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian)-Medieval Stirrup-strap Mount
Description
English: A complete Early-Medieval (Anglo-Scandinavian)-Medieval cast copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount (c. 1000-c. 1100 AD).

This mount is roughly hexagonal in plan and sub-rectangular in cross-section. It has a straight top and the bottom has a curved protruding lobe and does not possess a flange. It has moulded decoration at the front and is flat at the rear. At the centre, close to the top, there is an irregular shaped opening flanked on either side by a small circular hole. Near the bottom, at the centre, there is another circular hole. These three holes may have contained rivets. About midway along the length of the mount and at each side of the centre, there is a circular hole. These two holes are 'counter-sunk' at the front and may be decorative rather than functional. Decoration at the front appears to be two flanking beasts with their heads at the top and facing each other. The aforementioned irregular opening is between the heads.

This stirrup-strap mount is in poor condition, is corroded and worn and has a patina varying from light brown to dark brown.
Height: 33.41mm; width: 32.42mm; thickness: 3.49mn. Weight: 13.33g.

It can be classified as a Williams Class B (un-typed). See Williams 1997: 86-100.
