Summary edit

Description Lot 2282-5: The Northwind Hits It! With her diesel-electric motors, with power ranging up to 10,000 going full blast, the Coast Guard’s icebreaker Northwind (WAGB 282) charges the ice pack at top speed. Following the terrific crash, the Northwind rides half a ship’s length up onto the ice before she is stopped. She backs away and charges again and again, until the area is broken up and ready for the thin-hulled vessels which follow her. This arduous duty of Northwind was day after day routine as her part of the work of the Byrd Expedition to the Antarctic. The photograph was taken from Northwind’s helicopter. Operation Deep Freeze was from December 1956 to April 1957. Photographed through Mylar sleeve. Official U.S. Coast Guard Photograph. (2015/10/09).
