Shook Remark: The handwritten message on the reverse of this postcard states: Michigan City, Ind Feb 17-1910 Dear John-. I will drop you a card of a different view I have. This is me standing in front of the signal and Tom is on the ice in the lake. We were both out to the break water taking pictures last week walk out on the ice. I have been on the sick list all week but getting along nice again. Hoping you are all well. Best regards to you all as ever. Fred Dykman /2nd Asst. Light Keeper According to the J. Candace Clifford Lighthouse Research Catalog, <a href="https://archives.uslhs.org/people/frederick-dykeman" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Frederick Dykeman</a> was the 2nd Assistant Lighthouse Keeper at the Michigan City East Pierhead from 1909 to 1916. His beginning annual salary in this position was $420. The "Tom" referred to in the message is believed to be <a href="https://archives.uslhs.org/people/thomas-j-armstrong" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Thomas J. Armstrong</a>, the Principal Lighthouse Keeper at the Michigan City East Pierhead at the time this photographic image was taken. Armstrong served the Principal Lighthouse Keeper at Michigan City from 1904 to 1918. He would then transfer to become the Principal Lighthouse Keeper at the harbor in Chicago, serving in that position until at least 1930. Copyright 2020. Some rights reserved.
