Summary edit

Description
English: The clouds around Iceland parted as NASA’s Aqua satellite flew over Iceland on February 10, 2019, allowing the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board to acquire a true-color image of the snow-and-ice-covered island.

The heavy coat of late-winter white covers a rugged volcanic landscape and hides four permanent ice caps that stay frozen year-round. Langjokull and Hofsjokull in the interior west, Myrdalsjokull on the southern coast, and Vatnajokull on the eastern coast. The ice caps have a smooth, rounded appearance that contrasts with the snow-covered interior plateau of the island as well as with the rugged, glacier-carved coastlines. Vatnajokull is the largest of the four, and it rests on top of three active volcanoes. Thin clouds which hang over part of Iceland also make it difficult to see these ice caps.

Iceland sits near the Arctic Circle and winters are certainly frigid and snow-filled. However, the tail end of the warm Gulf Stream Current comes close to the island and help mitigate the severity of winter.
