Description

Leland, Idaho, from Elevation at East end of Main St, looking West

Date: 1912 Source Type: Postcard Printer, Publisher, Photographer: F. M. Snider, American News Company (#D1823) Postmark: None Collection: Steven R. Shook Remark: The numbered locations are identified as follows:

1. The Independent Order of Odd Fellows Hall (I.O.O.F.). A drugstore also operated from this building. 2. Frank Snyder Drugstore. The United States Post Office operated from this structure. 3. DeWinter & Goudzward General Store owned by Adrian DeWinter and Bert Goudzward. 4. Long Hotel (included a livery stable). 5. Dr. Joseph W. Stoneburner house. Directly behind the Stoneburner house was the Leland Methodist Episcopal Church North, which is not clearly visible in this postcard image. The M.E. North congregation had disbanded by 1920 and merged with the M.E. South congregation. 6. Charles VanPelt house. 7. Oriel Dumbauld's prune orchard. The ten acre orchard, planted around 1890, provided prunes that were processed, dried, and shipped for commercial sale elsewhere. When prices fell to two cents a pound, Dumbauld moved his family to Juliaetta, Latah County, Idaho. 8. Charles VanPelt's Flour Mill. This mill was completely destroyed by fire in 1915. 9. Leland Methodist Episcopal Church South. Leland had two Methodist Episcopal churches (North and South) that directly faced one another on Main Street. The M.E. South congregation was organized in 1890 and their church was built in 1895. The structure was later rented to local residents and was torn down in 1962. 10. Parsonage for Methodist Church South. 11. Nimrod Breckenridge Long house. 12. Hiram S. Hodges Blacksmith Shop and house. 13. Smith's Hardware Store, owned by Angus Henry Smith and his son, Russell Marshall Smith. When Russell passed away in 1935, his brother Robert Clayton Smith continued the operation of the business. 14. Charley August Johnson house. 15. Johnson Millinery shop. 16. Charlie Smith Blacksmith Shop.

Little remains of Leland, Nez Perce County, Idaho. Today [2017], there are just a few homes in the area and several outbuildings. The old, unoccupied Leland School still stands on the hillside along the east end of the community. A Nez Perce County Highway storage and maintenance building, the Leland Pioneer Community Church, and a McGregor agricultural products and services business are also located in Leland.

A post office operated in Leland from 1888 to 1942.
