Summary edit

Description
English: Idle Bridge at Shardlow, Derbyshire. The B5010 crosses the canal here. Shardlow was a busy river port before the Trent and Mersey Canal was authorised in 1766, and construction started in that year under the supervision of James Brindley. The route from Derwent Mouth (one mile away) to the Bridgewater Canal near Manchester allowed passage via Runcorn to the River Mersey, and was fully open by 1777. The section through Shardlow was open and in operation by 1770.
