| Description | Construida entre 1503 y 1505, por orden de los Reyes Católicos, formaba parte de un monasterio que debía servir de aposento a la Familia Real en sus viajes a Madrid (todavía no era capital de España). De ahí le viene el nombre, pues dichas habitaciones eran llamadas "Cuarto Real". Se fueron añadiendo distintas edificaciones hasta que en tiempos de Felipe IV se construye el Palacio del Buen Retiro. La invasión Napoleónica y el subsiguiente acuartelamiento de las tropas en el monasterio, supuso un grave deteriodo de toda la zona . En tiempos de Isabel II, el rey consorte Francisco de Asís promueve la rehabilitación de la Iglesia (1848-1859) , el arquitecto Narciso Pascual Colomer añade las torres y pináculos, el escultor Poncio Ponzano realiza el pórtico, que representa la Natividad de la Virgen . Es declarada Monumento Nacional en 1925. De su importancia histórica baste decir que aquí han tenido lugar los juramentos de todos los Herederos de la Corona desde Felipe II hasta Isabel II. |
