Air view of a farm near LaSalle, Illinois. There are two clusters of farm buildings in this photo from an airplane, each supporting a farm. The location is very approximate. Much of Illinois and other states in the Midwest was marked off in a grid, with roads every mile (1.6 km) or half mile (800m). The land was flat, for one thing. Perhaps more important was that much of the land was divided into "quarter sections" in the 1860s and after. Under the Homestead Act of 1862, settlers could gain title to a quarter section (160 acres / 65 ha) of land outside the original 18 colonies by living on the land for five years and making improvements. Illinois became a state in 1818, but was sparsely settled for many years aferward - witness the rise and fall of New Salem. I can not measure the photo, but I suspect that each square in the checkerboard is a quarter section, i.e., one half mile on a side.. |
