English: This is the Illinois State Monument which is located in the Vicksburg, National Military Park in Mississippi. The monument was transferred to the United States by the Governor C.S. Deneen and it was accepted by J.S. Schofield from the United States of War Department. The monument has sixty exquisite bronze tablets which are lined in the interior walls, which names all 36,325 Illinois soldiers that participated in the Vicksburg Campaign. It is also modeled after the Roman Pantheon. There are forty-seven steps in the stairway. The monument stands at exactly sixty-two feet in height. Charles J. Mulligan is the sculptor who built it and the design was made by W. L. B. Jenney. |
