Summary edit

Description The Illinois Traction Station, also known as the Illinois Traction Building or the Illinois Power Building, located at 41 East University Avenue in Champaign, Illinois was built in 1913 and was designed by Joseph Royer. It served as the headquarters of the Illinois Traction System (ITS), as well as the Champaign station. The Illinois Traction System, known after 1937 as the Illinois Terminal Railroad (ITR), was an interurban electric railroad which was formed by combining together streetcar lines in many cities in Illinois and Indiana. The ITR carried both freight and passengers from 1862 to 1982, although after 1956 it was a diesel-powered freight short line owned by nine Class I railroads, and passenger service ceased. The ITR was merged into the Norfolk & Western Railroad after that line bought out the interests of the other lines which owned the company. In its prime, the ITR sold electricity to customers in the cities and towns it serviced, until the electrical utility was spun off in 1937 into the Illinois Power and Light Company , which maintained its offices in this building until 1985. The company was later which bought out and consolidated into Ameren. (Source: [1])
