The Demo-cratic craft is stuck in the mud, and the Liberal-Repub-licans are being used for the same purpose to whichthe steamboat captain put his devout worshipers,and when, if ever, the end for which they are beingused is accomplished, they will be dismissed with anoath as wicked and heartless as was that of the captainof the boat. The overwhelming defeat of the Liberal-Republi-can-Democratic candidate was not due wholly to hisweakness, although this prevented the protest againstthe Republicans from being sufficiently vigorous toimpress the Party with the necessity of immediate andcomplete reform within itself. Public opinion isslow to change, sectional feeling still ran high, andthe Republican Party was continued in power, flushedwith success. Triumph is intoxicating, and refusesto recognize impending disaster. When Grant beganhis second term as President of the United States,Burrows first took his seat in Consfress.

Years before, in the early Penn-sylvania days, after the epoch-making experience oflistening to Daniel Websters speech and before hewas ten years old, he had been discovered mountedon a. stump back of the barn, delivering an oration.The derisive jeers from his brothers hurt his pride butfailed to shake his confidence. I dont care, theembryo statesman reiterated between his sobs ofmortification; some day you will hear my voice in thehalls of Congress. The RepubHcan Party had been, and still was, hisideal. In his campaigning he had exaggerated itsmerits and minimized its weaknesses; and to do thisover and over again inevitably resulted in having thebrief which he presented to the people become well-defined in his own mind.
