Text Appearing Before Image: ainly distinguished forthe bold eminences of the My/iydd Du, or Black Mountains {YFan—\X\Q highest point—2,596 feet above the sea), and the pretty valleys of the Gwendraeth Faivr and GweiidraethFach, the former rising in the hills near Llandebie, the latter near Penrhiw-goch. Theyenter the sea nearly together at Cydwe/i—a fine old name, meaning literally the junction ofwaters (Cyd-gwy-lli), which modern improvers have tortured into the meaningless Kid-welly. In the uplands above Cydweli is Ge/Iidcg, the seat of Richard Jennings, Esq ,commanding a fine view of the Carmarthen Bay ; near Llanstephan is the Fhu, once theresidence of the Lloyds, but now of Sir James Hamilton, Bart. ; and on the other side of the GEOLOGY AND MINKRALOCV. 223 Towy, Iscocd, the seat of J. W. Arengo Cross, Esq.; and Uj^hvid, the seat of E. MorrisDavies, Esq. In the neighbourhood of Llanelly are Llaiigciincch Park; Wcstfa, theresidence of Charles NeviU, Esq. ; Pcnyfai, the residence of James Buckley, Esq.;

Rees, Esq.; and Stradcy {Ystradau—\\\Q flats), tlieabode of David Lewis, Esq., as well as many other prominent mansions of the leadingmerchants and manufacturers. Section II.—GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY. The geological structure of Carmarthenshire has so little variety that its description iseasy and brief. The whole field includes but four or five species of formation, none ofwhich are of wide extent, except the lower Silurian of the Llandeilo group-called after thatname by geologists from the town of Llandeilo-fawr, in the neighbourhood of which the typicalrock prevails. Next to this conies the old red sandstone, and upon this is a thin bed ofmountain limestone, in whose cavity is deposited that formation which transcends all theothers in commercial value—the carboniferous group, or the Coal formation.
