The third halt was at Kultapah, where Ipassed an uncomfortable night, but was ready at daybreak foran early start toward Hamadan. Of the many hard stages that made up the journey of onehundred and fifty miles from Urumiah, over high, snow-coveredmountains, this last was one of the most difficult, for, althoughApril had advanced a week, the drifts in the passes were particu-larly deep, and the streams in the plains at the foot of the hillsswollen and extremely hard to ford.
