Glynllifon has been a place of note for four hundred years. In 1562 William Glyn, ofthis place, was High Sherifif of the county of Carnarvon, and in 1584 Thomas Glyn, his son,was High Sheriff of Anglesey. The family of Glyn continued till 1750, when it ended in anheiress who married Sir Thomas Wynn, of Bodeon, of the venerable line of Wynns of Bodfcland Gwydir, and ultimately of the stock of CoUwyn ap Tangno, Lord of Eifionydd, founderof one of the fifteen noble tribes. You pass the mountains of Yr Eifi {Rivel), the port of Nefyn, the anchorage of Porthdinllaen, cross Carn Madryn, which looks like a molehill in thedistance, glide over Rhos Hirwaun and Mynydd Ystum, and out a little beyond the extremityof the promontory you descry the holiest island—if the monks are to be believed—on thecoast of Britain. This is none other than Viiys Eiilli—in English Bardst^, the island of thebards,—measuring about two miles long and one broad. For centuries it was the gathering-place of pilgrims, the home of eremitic monks, the burial-place of holy dead, from allcountries of Christendom.
