DonCarlos of Spain (d. 1855) is interred in the south aisle, andFouch^, Napoleons minister of police, in front of thechurch, while the churchyard contains the grave andmonument of Winckelmann, the archxologist, who wasmurdered at Trieste in 1768. The Arco di Riccardo, alsoin the old town, derives its name from a popular delusionthat it was connected with Richard Coeur-de-Lion, but isprobably an arch of a Roman aqueduct. A collection ofRoman antiquities found in or near the town has beenformed near the castle. The most prominent building inthe new town is the Tergesteo, a huge edifice containingthe exchange and numerous shops and offices. The city hospital has accom-modation for 2000 patients. The huge Politeama is thelargest theatre. In front of the Palazzo Revoltella is amonument to the emperor Maximilian of Mexico, who hadbeen an admiral in the Austrian service. His sumptuouschateau of Miramar is one of the lions of the neighbour-hood. The capacious harbour, consisting of two parts, theold and the new, is protected by extensive moles andbreakwaters, and has been greatly improved within thelast ten or fifteen years. From the harbour the CanalGrande extends into the town, allowing large vessels tounload at the warehouses. At the end of the Molo StaTeresa is a lighthouse upwards of 100 feet high.
